DOWEL PROJECT
In 2022, we were invited to design and make cabinetry for a couple’s new build in Devonport by Geoff Richards Architects. The brief included a large kitchen, a lounge for creative pursuits, and a bedroom and bathroom with touches of luxury.
Wooden split dowel was chosen as a visual language to connect spaces and bring warmth and dynamism to the home’s restrained palette. It’s versatility is used to great effect throughout the house; the natural curves of the dowel are mimicked in the curve of the kitchen island, while the negative detailing on the wardrobes heighten its linear qualities.
In the kitchen, tonal blocks of Tasmanian Oak cabinetry, an aged brass extraction and a Silver Roots marble counter and niche add a jewel-like quality to the space. Quiet spaces are also achieved with beautifully upholstered nooks built into the bedroom and lounge.
There are also elements of whimsy. The bright white veining of black Nero Marquina stone in the bathroom vanity is a playful inverse of Silver Roots, while the kitchen island hides a secret - a drinks cabinet in high gloss Resene Summer Green. Meanwhile, in the lounge, the client’s prized guitars are housed safely in a custom built curvy cork-lined cabinet.
